Vietnam-Russia joint venture Vietsovpetro on December 7 put into operation a new oil platform at the Tho Trang (White Rabbit) field, about 120 kilometres off the coast of Vung Tau.

The 50 metre deep oil rig, known as ThTC-02, is located to the south of the Tho Trang field and weighs nearly 3,400 tonnes. It is designed to drill 12 wells and is capable of handling 6,000 tonnes of oil per day.

Total cost for the rig is US$64.2 million, of which US$47.5 million was spent on platform installation and the remaining for undersea pipes.

Deputy General Director of Vietsovpetro Tran Xuan Hoang said the ThTC-02 is evidence of the company’s mastery of technology, from engineering to installation.

He said besides a number of pieces of equipment which Vietnam is unable to manufacture, such as power generators and underground pumps, most of the other parts were designed and manufactured by members of Vietsovpetro.

The company also installed equipment from similar but inefficient platforms onto the ThTC-02 to help reduce the total cost by US$17.9 million.

The platform has been certified by DNV to meet international standards.

Currently the ThTC-02 is drilling from three wells, producing 1,100 tonnes per day, and accounting for 7.5% of Vietsovpetro’s total output.
